GREAT SOUTH LAND
- ©Hod Cay

© Jim Low

The Southern Cross and the Milky Way
Looked down on earth one distant day
And rejoiced with glee as from the sea
The wondrous land arose.
Warmed by heat from the golden sun
Washed by seas that had just begun
To gild and band the dazzling sands
That ring these shores around.

Marked by stars in the southern sky
Created by the One on high
A land alone and quite unknown
Asleep in the arms of time.
The long years came and passed away
As God's hand moved by night and day
Creating with pride the countryside
That we now call our own.

Rare seedlings from celestial strands
Were planted in those virgin lands
Gold wattle trees that scent the breeze
Are truly quite divine.
He made the graceful white gums rise
Their slender limbs held to the skies;
Where blossoms blew new forests grew
Like nymphs from sylvan shores.

We found this land but yesterday
And heedless of its ancient way
We worked with need and careless deed
Its timeworn heart to still.
Lovely stars of the southern sky
Wonderful God who dwells on high
Please give us grace and teach our race
The ways of this lonely land.
