- Publications included in category 1 were generally issued irregularly, at no cost, and were short-lived. They were usually handwritten, duplicated by carbon or stencil machine, and only one or two pages. They were produced virtually in the front line, and under little or no official control.
- Category 2 publications were more regular and were usually typed, sometimes printed. They often contained four or more pages and were sold to readers. They were produced behind, though often near, the front line and there was usually some official control.
- Category 3 publications were substantial, regular and frequent. They were printed and produced professionally or semi-professionally, and were sold to readers. They tended to be either official or semi-official publications, produced for the AIF or parts of it.
