Lagerphones and Lefties

Introduction

by Rob Willis

My goal with any field recording is to get the best possible quality and to this end I normally persuade either my wife Olya or a friend to accompany me on field trips. After the recording environment has been established they monitor the recording levels that often fluctuate between speech and music. This monitoring allows me to give full attention to the person I am talking with. My offsiders are also adept in the technique of summarising in situ and this saves considerable time in not having to listen to the tape at a later date to get the details.

My other obsession along with good recording practice is the provision of fully detailed, written timed summaries.

Over the years Olya and John Harpley have put up with my eccentricities whilst on the track and in more recent times Jim Low, Bruce Cameron and John Watson have been kind enough to come for a drive.
Thanks to you all, in particular Ollie who along with her recording and photographic skills has spent many an hour after an interview entering data on her trusty lap top computer.

Jim Low has already written about the people we meet and I hope in time to persuade all my travelling companions to give their thoughts.

Bruce Cameron writes this month's contribution.

The subject of this month's article, Lola Wright, formed the South Coast Bush Band in the mid 1950's. I believe this band to be the second Bush (whacker) band in NSW (maybe Australia?) and most importantly a woman ran it.
