Ebb the Performer

" When I was 6 years old we shifted into Canowindra in 1919 and the Rev Stanley Drummond was the Methodist Minister an Canowindra and! was a bit of a Bobby Brcen (a famous boy soprano of the era.) and! had a very very good voice for a boy and the Rev.

"Stanley Drummond* used to take me all around his parish and I used to sing for the people on a Sunday. I petformed with him for 3 years and its a strange thing - possibly that early experience never ever made me feel stage shy.

"I can get up and play in front of one person or a thousand people and it makes no dtfference, because I'm not playing for them I'm playing for myself and that's just the way I feel when I get up to do something. It's just as though there is nobody there and I'm playing for myself"

- Ebb Wren, 3 May 1989.

Dance Tunes

"I used to play for the Quadrilles and all of them even on a mouth organ!

1 forgot 'em now, that's the bloody trouble because I never carried them on. Different styles of dancing come in and they just simply faded out.

Look, it was greatfor me when I was a young fella, 12, 13 or 14 to go along to a shearin' shed dance up around the Cudal, Canowindra area. You'd go to a shearin' shed, you see, there'd be an old fella sitting there on the accordion, you see. I'd be on the mouth organ, me fat her would be on the fiddle and there we'd go and we'd play for these dances and of course the old man he went back to the 1800s and he knew all the old first set, second set quadrilles and the likes of that."

- Ebb Wren, 3 May 1989.
