SOFALA

Sofala is situated just under fifty kilometres from the New South Wales city of Bathurst, in an approximate north-easterly direction. The oldest surviving gold town in Australia, it began its life in 1851 when gold was discovered in the area.

Tens of thousands flocked here, but the rush was short lived. Within less than a year, people were moving on to newer areas to seek their fortunes. Today this picturesque little town with the musical sounding name, nestles in the Turon Valley beside the river which is also named Turon. The main street is still bordered by examples of the two storey wooden homes and businesses which characterised the town during the fleeting boom time of gold.
