LIKE ME AND YOU

LIKE ME AND YOU

The variegated colours of this wide land,
The top end green, the Red Centre sand,
The sky and sea in different shades of blue,
Outback roads, gun-barrel straight,
A “Snag”, a chop on a Bar-B-que plate,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

The flying doctor, the Outback nurse,
Kangaroo paw and Patterson's Curse,
The long Ghan train and its driving crew,
The fettlers on bush railway lines,
Plump ripe fruit on sagging vines,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

Millions of sheep and a lot more flies,
Campfire songs under ebony skies,
Faithful dog and an ice-cold beer or two,
Mozzie coils on the back verandah,
The mighty Murray and its slow meander,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

Mile long beaches of shimmering sand,
Street recitals by the “Salvos” band,
Desire for a house with an ocean view,
Saturday footy with pies and peas,
The snowy mountains and flashing skis,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

The long gone days of the boxing tent,
Boyhood billycarts with axles bent,
Laughing kids with skinned knees quite a few,
The soothing calm of falling rain,
On iron roofs, hard to explain,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

Hot roast dinners on our Christmas Day,
The gutter sweeper with horse and dray,
Radical “Pollies” who wouldn't have a clue,
Picnic races by the Birdsville track,
Bodgie boomerangs that don't come back,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

Fields of wheat and tall sugar cane,
Old bush pubs down a country lane,
One big room with an outdoor long drop 'Loo,
Wharfies and the harbour side pubs,
“White leghorns” at their bowling clubs,
Are as dinkum Aussie as me, and you!

Sporting greats of bat and ball,
Young Aussie blokes who heard the call,
Took on the world and won the odd big blue,
They made this land of the tall gum tree,
A heavenly haven where all are free,
And all are dinkum Aussies like me, and you!
